What Rack and Pinion Steering Actually Does
The rack and pinion converts rotational motion (you turning the wheel) into lateral motion (the wheels turning left or right). The steering shaft turns a small gear (pinion) that meshes with a flat gear bar (rack). It's mechanically simple and direct, which is why it gives better road feel than older recirculating ball systems.
