PicoScope and Waveform Diagnostics

10 Lessons

Master the PicoScope 4425A — the industry-standard automotive diagnostic oscilloscope.

Overview

The PicoScope 4425A is the benchmark tool in advanced automotive diagnostics. This module covers setup, waveform capture and interpretation, secondary ignition analysis, current ramp testing, CKP/CMP correlation, pressure transducer testing, CAN bus diagnosis, parasitic draw analysis, and building a professional waveform reference library.

Key Components

  • PicoScope 4425A (4-channel, 20 MHz, 12-bit)
  • Current clamps (20A and 600A)
  • WPS500X pressure transducer
  • Secondary ignition probes (TA011)
  • PicoScope 7 software

How It Works

The PicoScope captures electrical signals over time at microsecond resolution, displaying them as waveforms you can measure, compare, and analyze. Unlike a multimeter that shows one number, the scope shows the entire event — voltage spikes, current ramps, signal dropouts, and timing relationships between multiple circuits simultaneously.

Common Problems

  • Intermittent misfires invisible to scan tool
  • Timing chain stretch requiring phase angle measurement
  • Fuel pump commutator wear before failure
  • CAN bus network faults killing communication
  • Parasitic draws from modules not sleeping

Diagnostic Tips

  • Always capture a known-good reference before diagnosing
  • Zero your current clamp before every test
  • Use the rotation ruler for CKP/CMP phase angle measurement
  • Compare cylinders overlaid — find the outlier, find the problem
  • Save every capture with vehicle info for your reference library
