Thermal Imaging Diagnostics
7 LessonsUse thermal cameras to find electrical faults, misfires, brake problems, and HVAC issues in seconds.
Overview
Every automotive problem creates, blocks, or changes a heat pattern. This module teaches you to use thermal imaging cameras (FLIR, Topdon, Seek Thermal) as a first-response diagnostic tool ā finding electrical resistance faults, engine misfires, HVAC failures, brake drag, bearing wear, turbo problems, and exhaust leaks faster than any conventional method.
Key Components
- Thermal cameras (FLIR C5, Topdon TC004, FLIR ONE)
- Emissivity concepts and the tape trick
- Temperature gradient interpretation
- Reference image library
- Documentation for service advisors
How It Works
Thermal cameras detect infrared radiation emitted by surfaces and convert it to a visible temperature map. High resistance in electrical circuits creates heat (P=I²R). Mechanical friction creates heat. Fluid flow changes heat patterns. By scanning components and comparing to known-good patterns, you identify faults non-invasively in seconds.
Common Problems
- Corroded connectors and bad grounds causing heat
- Sticking calipers showing hot rotors
- Stuck-open thermostats visible on hose temps
- Dead cylinders showing cold exhaust runners
- Failing wheel bearings running hot
Diagnostic Tips
- Scan fuse boxes with all loads on ā hot fuse = problem circuit
- Scan exhaust manifold within 90 seconds of cold start for misfire ID
- Compare all 4 brake rotors immediately after test drive
- Use electrical tape on shiny surfaces for accurate readings
- Build a thermal reference library just like waveform references
